Daily Diary: 1.24.12
by Catherine R. Staat
Top: Red sweater (thrift) with black/white scarf (hand-made gift from Kyrgyzstan)
Bottom: Levi Jeans & St. John’s Bay Caley Tall Boots
Accessories: Simple silver jewelry
Nail Color: NYC (Long Wearing) Big Apple Red #131
Lip Color: NYC Sheer Red #309
More On the Scarf: We had friends that are humanitarians among the deaf in Kyrgyzstan – an amazing ministry! My understanding is that those who are deaf, in that country, are pretty much left to their own devices. Alex and Tina Savelyev would raise their own money to fund their trip over and try to educate and help find ways for this community to support themselves. I think of the hands that made this scarf everytime I wear it and the person who gave it me.
What I Ate Today:
- Breakfast: water, coffee, 2 waffles with peanut butter
- Snack: A wonderfully crisp red apple
- Lunch: water, turkey melt (see above) & salad
- Birthday Dinner for Sarah: Fettucine Alfredo (homemade sauce), salad, cheesecake (homemade), Doritos, cookies – her choice and red wine, coffee (with the cheesecake) & water before bed
What I Did Today:
Art Class!!! Today we learned about the Mola art form. Here is what I worked on…
This was not easy to do and required some thought before cutting into the paper. We used construction paper instead of material. Be sure to check out the link on Mola here.
The rest of the day was about Sarah. Around here, the birthday boy/girl gets to choose the menu for the entire day. Birthdays start the moment you wake up with a small gift waiting on your nightstand and end with gifts from the family at dinner. We try to keep birthdays simple and not over do. It is more about celebrating another year together.
Sarah turned 17 – hard to believe!

Love the artwork. I am always surprised by the numbers of birthdates my children collect. I can’t have a 20 y.o. yet, I barely feel as if I am in my late 40s.
Thank you about the artwork. We are having so much fun with the classes! It is amazing how quickly the birthdays come and go and come again. My oldest will be 27 soon which I can’t wrap my brain around because I feel like I’m still 27 not 44! I will say…I love being in my 40s!
Happy Birthday Sarah!
Catherine, your birthday traditions sound so lovely and thoughtful. I can only imagine how I’ll feel when Amanda reaches this age, when she begins to seperate emotionally from me and examine her own independence. (She started her period day-before-yesterday, so I’m feeling rather sentimental about my girl!) Aah, the threshold of adulthood…I wish you much wisdom, my friend.
Peace & Strength,
Leigh
We enjoy our little birthday tradition especially the planning part!
What a big event for Miss Amanda and for you as well! Did you guys do anything special to celebrate? Sounds weird but I figure this is something they will have for a very long time and we might as well make the best of it. Sarah and I will often be on the same schedule and find something to do to help us get through it – picking up food we are craving, shopping, going to the movies – just some girl time.
Personally, I think the kids grow up w-a-y too fast!
Happy birthday Sarah — 17! It’s a lovely age, old enough to be make your own decisions and start doing adult things but not yet old enough to have to take full responsibility for your living monetarily.
Cat I know what you mean re Krgyzstan and the disabled as a friend of mine volunteered in an American run Romanian mission of disabled babies and children.
BTW that red is lovely on you.
Thank you Rose for Sarah’s birthday wishes. Right now, she is learning the fine art of saving her money and how quickly it can run through one’s fingers if not careful!
I would love to hear more about your friend and their mission in Romania. Is there a website and do they still continue to run the mission?
And thank you about the red. It is a favorite color of mine.
Happy belated birthday to Sarah !! She’s one year younger than my daughter ; ) My daughter just turned 18 in December.
The food looks wonderful and the birthday dinner sounds really delicious. Have a wonderful day and birthday wishes to Sarah !!
Thank you Monique!!!
